Poems by Postcards

I've recently been listening to a lot of vocal poetry (Google: 'Sarah Kay' for softness or 'To This Day' for anger). The voices perform emotion, and they interweave with one another into it.

The following letter is written in two, perhaps three voices: the indented, non-indented, and both together. These voices are best read one at a time, like reading a letter first along, then between the lines.

Learning to Write                                                         |

Kelly Kochanski

   I write
Dear Friend,
How have you been?
because the one who stood by me
   (Watching thunderstorms,
   humid nights,
It has been too long since I have seen you.
   silence.) is
I long to tell you of my travels -
   waiting empty
the land here is exaggerated, reaching up
   for me
five thousand metres high; the valleys rush
   to fill
the gaps with living strands of green.
These mountains, these monuments, I love
   them with my thoughts.
ever more each evening.
I long to hold you, ask you
But it grows late; I've never
  what is this
time enough to write, Before I go, do tell me -
  love?
How have you been?
